ACROSS THE AMERICAS ONLINE SERIES

Lila Downs is one of the most influential artists in Latin America. She has one of the most unique voices in the world and is known for her charismatic performances. His own compositions combine genres and rhythms as diverse as Mexican rancheras and corridos, boleros, jazz standards, hip-hop, cumbia and popular American music. Frequently her lyrics focus on justice, immigration and women’s problems.

Born in Medellin, Colombia, and based in Montreal for the past decade, the multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Ramon Chicharron is a nomadic soul. With his distinctive voice, catchy groove influenced by latin rhythms, and a touch of electronic sounds, Ramon will take you on a colorful trip. His dansable compositions are inspired by a desire to live a simpler life, a world without borders and the difficulties one encounters when pursuing his dream.

Pedrina is a Colombian artist, musician, singer, and songwriter. She was one of those responsible for the formation of the successful duo Pedrina y Rio, an important act of alternative pop active during the second decade of the new millennium. In this project Pedrina sang, composed lyrics and melodies and served as the aesthetic brain behind the image of the band.

Valeria Cox was born in Chile. Born of a mother from Argentina and a father from Chile. Since very little she lives in countries like Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan. Her arrival to Mexico in 2008 awakens her passion for music and in that moment, she starts to work in different music groups, developing her first songs as a singer-songwriter. She combines different styles, rhythms, and latinoamerican sonorities. Her compositions go from ballads, to cumbias and candombe accompanied with a powerful and expressive voice.

Unitierra originated directly from our work with Oaxacan communities. When the State Forum of the State of Oaxaca publicly declares that the school has been the main instrument of the state to destroy the populations and a series of communities decide to close their schools and fire their teachers, a scandal was made and every sort of ways of creating pressure was made. Nonetheless, some of them persist.

Kaôki was formed in São Paulo in March 2013, with Vivi Limeira (vocals), Eduardo Escalier (drums), Paulinho Pessoa (guitar) and Ney Haddad (bass), musicians from different parts of Brazil, from Rio Grande do Sul to São Paulo and Alagoas, who met in São Paulo to start the project.
Kaôki means “wind” in the Apinajés indigenous dialect. The wind, despite always seeming the same thing, is everywhere and causes different sensations in each person. That’s Kaôki’s music, always music, but everyone feels it differently…
Kaôki is Brazilian Music, with influences of Rock, Pop, Soul and Blues.

Nación Ekeko was born from travel, from encounters with Latin American characters, from collected songs and recitations. A great musical journey that crosses the open veins of Latin America from end to end. The Ekeko is Diego Pérez, and so are his instruments that he combines one by one, song by song: Sonolumas (wireless controller designed by Diego Pérez), four Venezuelan, keyboard, guitar, Andean winds and programming, guided by an innate ability for improvisation and composition in real time. A magical and unmissable show!

The Arepa is one of the most important dishes in Venezuela, a gluten-free cornbread sandwich that is stuffed with a variety of meats, cheeses, veggies, and salsas. This is a small company that dreams to share with the world all those recipes from our grandparents back in Venezuela.

BOSTICH + FUSSIBLE who in 1999 founded an electronic music collective, Nortec Collective, has now returned as NORTEC: BOSTICH + FUSSIBLE with their newest single “Sueño Fronterizo” featuring Kinky released in March 2020. Emerged from the burgeoning electronic scene in Tijuana, Mexico their style of music called Nortec – a fusion of Norteño (northern Mexican music) and Techno, brought together heavy dance beats and traditional forms of Mexican music performed with live instrumentation.

Martha Chaves is a Nicaraguan-Canadian comedian, actress, activist and playwright. She performs comedy in English, Spanish, French and Italian. She is a regular in the comedy circuits in Canada, the United States and Latin America, at Just for Laughs and other major festivals, and on CBC Radio.

Thune was born in Seattle, Washington and grew up in Redmond. Thune moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career in stand-up. His early stand-up shows focused on wordplay while he played the guitar, which he has said was used as more of a prop than to create musical comedy. 

Roberto taste for comedy began at age 13 after watching a South Park episode. Later, he began acting on various stages and becoming involved in the Stand up genre. After spending a year on stage, he decided to try his luck and started writing for television.

Over the past decade and a half percussionist Robin has steeped himself in rhythmic traditions around the world from Cuba to West Africa to Mexico and beyond. He brings these influences to bear in his compositions that are inspired by his travels. Robin has worked with many of Canada’s finest global artists and toured throughout China, Europe, Mexico, USA and Canada.

With almost 15 years on stage and 6 recorded discs, the group combines weekly presentations throughout Peru with periodic international forays, such as their recent European tour.

He was a top-ten finalist on Last Comic Standing and continues to flourish as an actor and voice-over artist in addition to touring as a stand-up comic across North America. He has appeared in Showtime’s. He has also appeared on the hilarious @midnight on Comedy Central and several times on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
