In Memory of Lives Lost

Kapwa & Comunidad Rising Together

Though they are gone, their presence remains
Forever shining in the path we walk together.

On April 26, 2025, after what was meant to be a joyful celebration of Filipino culture, a senseless act of violence occurred following the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver, claiming the lives of 11 innocent people and leaving many others forever changed.

We hold space in our hearts for every life lost:

Among the victims were four members of the Latin American community. At Latincouver were honoured to have known Glitza, Glitza Maria, and Kira as past volunteers.

Their contributions brought light, joy, and a spirit of service to our cultural events and programs.

This tragedy has drawn our communities closer — but our connection is not new. The Filipino and Latin American peoples have long shared common threads woven through our histories, our cultures, and our ways of being in the world.

A Common
Colonial Past

The Philippines and much of Latin America share over 300 years of Spanish colonization. A legacy that shaped our language, culture, and identity. Tagalog and Spanish still share many words and connected histories.

Family,
Always

Family is central to both cultures, with close-knit ties to extended family and a strong support network. We raise each other’s children, care for elders, and build community through shared responsibility and affection.

Faith &
Tradition

The Catholic Church plays a major role in community life and collective celebrations in both cultures. From Simbang Gabi in the Philippines to Las Posadas in Latin America, faith remains a foundation for meaning-making.

Culture, Colour,
and Celebration

Music, dance, and festive gatherings reflect the hospitality, warmth, and enduring joy of our peoples. Whether it’s a fiesta in Manila or Carnaval in Colombia, we celebrate life loudly — even in the face of hardship.

Together for Mental Health

“Together for Mental Health” is our direct response to the pain we’ve experienced. Instead of standing still in grief, we are moving forward with purpose:

Every contribution helps expand access to care and build a more compassionate, resilient future.

Turning Grief Into Collective Action

Healing and Community

Healing Circles

Short, trauma-informed sessions led by Filipino and Latin American facilitators. Offered twice daily during Carnaval del Sol, these circles take place in a quiet, welcoming space designed for rest, reflection, and connection.

Health & Wellness Booth

Find resources to support your physical and mental health, including information on Latincouver’s wellness and vaccination programs. Available in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. Booths include:

  • Provincial Health Services Authority
  • SUCCESS (affordable counselling and crisis line)
  • Filipino BC (NGO)

Because your voice matters.

Write a message of remembrance, encouragement, or support. As the festival unfolds, the wall will grow with handwritten expressions of love, resilience, and community care.

“Healing doesn’t happen alone. It happens together.”

Celebrating Filipino Culture

For the first time, Filipino culture will be proudly featured at Carnaval del Sol:

Disclaimer

“In 2025, a portion of the funds raised through Carnaval del Sol will be directed to support mental health initiatives in our wider community.
While this year’s campaign was inspired by the shared grief and resilience of the Latin American and Filipino communities following the Lapu Lapu tragedy, its impact will reach far beyond — benefiting individuals and families across Vancouver through a partnership with a local mental health charity.”
