He studied   Marketing and Business, and most recently, he just finished a Project Management course at   the UBC. Pepe prides himself in running professional businesses that add value to BC’s   economy. He has created many direct and indirect jobs in markets that were not being serviced   in Whistler before. He deserves to be acknowledged as his progress and success, together with   his strategic business plans, serve as motivation for other Latin people to succeed in BC. Copy of Copy of ILA-31Marlin and Fito are award­winners songwriters and singers, including a nomination for Juno  Awards, the highest award in the Canadian industry.born in Guatemala and long­date   Vancouverites. Marlin and Fito’s main goal is to bring people happiness, education and hope   through their music. Copy of Copy of ILA-5Anne is the president of Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports, a non­profit that provides   skiing/snowboarding programs for people with disabilities. Anne strives to live a truly passionate   and purposeful life while supporting others to do the same regardless of their ability, culture or   status.
 Copy of Copy of ILA-12Marcus is a Capoeira master, born in Brazil and currently living in Vancouver. Marcus is one of  the most influential capoeira players in the world, and has represented the art in MMA fights,   including a 2.5 million views youtube video. Marcus and Axe Capoeira donate services and   performance groups to many charities, including the Canucks Autism Foundation as well as   multiple non­profit organizations in Brazil.  Copy of Copy of ILA-9Javier works as a volunteer facilitator, mentoring Latino youth in Chicago, and more recently, in   Vancouver. He has also made significant contributions to Flamenco Rosario and Vancouver   Latino American Film Festival. This year, Javier started a project called “Lazos Hispanos”. He is   also the board advisor of the Mexican Talent of British Columbia.  Copy of Copy of ILA-1Bradford is the CEO of Endeavour Silver Corp., a Vancouver­based mid­tier mining company.  Sustainability is an integral part of how Endeavour Silver conducts its business, and the   company has been awarded numerous times: distinction as a Socially responsible company;   annual certification by the Mexican Philanthropy Centre, the Alliance for Social Responsibility in   Mexico, among others.

Nominees 2015

Art & Culture

Copy of Copy of ILA-16Ari de la Mora is an artist born and raised in Mexico. Since moving to Canada, she has   participated in multiple events promoting Mexican and Latin American culture, being the most   recent one “Make It Happen” on March 8, 2015 to celebrate International Women’s Day, event   that she also organized.

Copy of Copy of ILA-17 Camilo is a magician born in Bogota, Colombia. While overcoming many challenges, Camilo  has been an active member of the Latin American community in Vancouver. For every show   Camilo does, he donates to different fundraising activities. His next step is to donate the   proceeds from his tour in Colombia to Fundacion Neumologica Colombiana.

Copy of Copy of ILA-18David was born in Toronto, but moved at a very early age to Colombia. After experiencing  hardships since coming back to his country of birth, David was able to join the school of music   at UBC, and since then, he has been the recipient of several scholarships, as well as received   invitations to perform in numerous ceremonies. Copy of Copy of ILA-19Deborah is a singer from Cuba. After a difficult beginning (she financed her first album), she has   earned several awards, such as representing Canada at the 2010 Cultural Olympiad, the 2013’s   Vancouver Best of the City, among many others.
Copy of Copy of ILA-20Monica is a well respected contemporary dance choreographer, teacher and film producer from   Brazil. Monica went through a lot of difficulties, starting from her humble beginnings in Brazil to   earning scholarships to finance her studies. Now that she has earned her place professionally,   Monica tries to make a difference in other people’s lives by giving opportunities for them to  grow. Copy of Copy of ILA-21Silvana is an Argentine­-Canadian award­winner author of over twenty books and magazines for   children and teachers in Spanish and English. Since coming to Canada, Silvana has been an   advocate to Spanish speaking families to enjoy their mother language, and strongly believes   that children should have fun in preserving and deepening their connection with the language  and culture. Copy of Copy of ILA-29Diego is an innovative dancer/choreographer from Colombia, who is now at the top of his art  form. He has been recognized nationally and internationally, having won the World Cuban Salsa   Championship in Miami four times & even had his own television program called Latin Dance   Workout with Diego Sanchez. Business Entrepreneur

Copy of Copy of ILA-22Gabriela earned a Bachelor’s of Business in Marketing, with honours, from Universidad  Intercontinental in Mexico City. She has been volunteering since she immigrated to Canada   such as Mexican consulate and currently working for a ESL school where she started as a   Marketing assistant and now she became the Marketing director for Latin American programs. Copy of Copy of ILA-23Jairo Prada has been an excellent example for many professional immigrants who come here  and would like to start their own businesses. He is passionate about helping other Immigrants to   succeed. He has been a Mentor to many immigrant job seekers, also has been part of our group   of speakers at the immigrant entrepreneur events where he talks with newcomers to share with   them his own journey. Copy of Copy of ILA-24Joanna is the founder and Editor­In­Chief of Hayo Magazine that a lifestyle magazine for  travelers. She has traveled to more than 56 cities in 23 countries such as Cartagena, Auckland   and Los Angeles where she began her professional writing career as a travel contributor for the   national Colombian publication El Tiempo. Also she is involved in a number of organizations   and communities around the world. Copy of Copy of ILA-25Liliana is Chief Green Officer and Partner of Green Chair Recycling which is a social enterprise   and works with a large team of volunteers to deliver real zero waste. They offer free Educational   Outreach sessions and workshops to schools, businesses and community groups to share their   knowledge about recycling and to inspired people to live more sustainably.
 Copy of Copy of ILA-26As a Real Estate Investor, He created a business from zero to 4 million dollars for 4 years. He   arrived to Canada with no more than $1,000 dollars and started work as a dishwasher,   construction and in Subway for paying his tuition. In 4 years, he was able to buy a portfolio of 24   units of real estate. She is giving free lessons for kids who can’t afford it,   training her elite Grupo America dancers for free, and also giving expensive shows for our Latin   community without charging anything.

 

Innovation and Sustainability

Starting from  scratch, and enduring challenges throughout its 15 years of existence, Natural Trade has   consolidated its position in trade, being the largest exporter of lumber products to industrial and   commercial clients in Mexico. In recognition of the company’s success, Carlos has been   awarded numerous times for his outstanding work ethic, being a finalist of HSBC International   Business Awards 2013, and EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year 2014. Copy of Copy of ILA-3Glenn, together with Jessica Bratty, are the principals at GEMM. Since its inception, GEMM has   been closely identified with the wide diversity of perspectives and players within the mineral   sector across Latin America. In this world, the GEMM dialogues explore making hard choices,   especially in conflicted environments, starting with the most basic question: is it better to fight in   the courts or the media, or try to talk it out with people who see the world differently than they   do?

Copy of Copy of ILA-33Edna, together with Pong Yin­Pong Leung, are the owners of Travesia Partners Consulting.    Travesia Partners is a consulting company that provides practical sustainability solutions that   create value for organizations. Travesia works in partnership with many organizations, such as   Sustainable cities International, Vancouver Society of Children’s Centres, ITESM, among   others.

Copy of Copy of ILA-4Jeff is a faculty member at the Sauder School of Business at UBC. His passion for international  development and business education, led to the development of the Arc initiative. The Arc has   then expanded to many countries, including Latin America, with Medellin, Colombia and Lima,   Peru.

Non-Latino

Copy of Copy of ILA-28Casey miller  Casey is a Harvard graduate who, through sharing incredible journeys with others and raising   money for organizations that serve the world, founded Travelteerism: the philosophy  that   travellers are uniquely  positioned to not just explore the world, but also make a profound and   lasting impact on the places they visit. Copy of Copy of ILA-5Anne is the president of Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports, a non­profit that provides   skiing/snowboarding programs for people with disabilities. Sports and Athletics

Copy of Copy of ILA-13Pedro is a soccer professional, playing for the Vancouver Whitecaps since 2014. A technically  gifted playmaker, Pedro has played in some of the biggest leagues in the world, including the   Spanish La Liga, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League. Pedro also supports   several events, such as fundraising activities for the Chilean flooding victims. Copy of Copy of ILA-32This two men started Active Body Nutrition about 3 years ago as a hobby and passion for the  health and supplement industry, now it has expanded and sold over 10 franchises in BC and   Alberta. They always donate and help athletes who want to succeed, but don’t have the funds   to. Copy of Copy of ILA-6Claudio is a former soccer professional, now head coach and technical director of North Shore   Girls Soccer Academy and the president of Gaucho Futbol Academy. Claudio highly believes   that soccer is an avenue for kids to learn life skills, interact with other children, build   relationships and confidence. Claudio has volunteered for many causes, including YWCA U6­  U9 youth teams and men’s teams during in­season training.

 

Waldo Briño

Copy of Copy of ILA-10Juan Carlos Lopez­Duran is a Vancouver­based international award winning Venezuelan   filmmaker.Juan’s movies intend to not only only respect the different ethnic communities where   it  happens, like Nepal, Venezuela or Greenland, but honor them by recognizing and admiring their  wisdom, their development, their social values and spiritual beliefs. Copy of Copy of ILA-11Liliana was born in Mexico, and for 11 years has called Canada home. Since then, Liliana has   been an active voice of Latin American people through many groups in which she is part of,   such as North Langley Community Church, NightShift Ministry, Super Single Moms Saturday,   among others. Copy of Copy of ILA-7What really makes Edgar stand up is his involvement with the Latin­American community. He  enjoys working with people, multicultural environments, challenges, new technologies,   mentoring and coaching. Edgar is also a founder of the Venezuelan Canadian Society of BC   (VCSBC). His passion for serving also made him the President Elect of the Rotary Club of   Vancouver Yaletown. Copy of Copy of ILA-14Rigoberto is a successful professional who, after years of challenges and struggles, managed to  work at the Colombian Consulate while having his own company. By knowing the challenges an   immigrant faces in Canada, Rigoberto tries to make sure others don’t have to suffer to the   degree he did. Today, Rigo is amazingly generous with his time, resources and connections, as   evident in the fact that he has helped hundreds if not thousands of Latin Americans and people   in need find everything from jobs to free furniture to places to live in the Lower Mainland.
Copy of Copy of ILA-8Mr. Rodríguez was a successful businessman and journalist in his native Irapuato, México. He   ran a daily newspaper and owned several ranches in central Mexico. However, he and his   family were forced to leave Mexico in 1985 because of a political persecution. Mr. Rodríguez   recognizes that he was once in need of support and help, which he received fully from the Latin   American community when he and his family arrived in Canada, and for that reason he is   dedicated to helping and promoting ways to get the community involved in supporting those in   need. Copy of Copy of ILA-15Silvia was born in Argentina and has been involved with the Latin American community in BC   and Canada for many years. Silvia is part of the Board of Youth for Christ Canada and she   brought Wake Up Deborah to Canada and made it to be recognized by Youth For Christ   Canada. Silvia has been helping Latin women to adjust into this culture. She know the   differences between two culture and this affect a family when they try to raise their kids in a new   culture.
